For some, Union Square wasn't merely a shopping destination but a backdrop for family traditions and celebrations. "We are here as a family," explained Susan Hawkins and Lori Sanchez to KTVU, discussing their 30-strong family gathering. Undeterred by the fact that a white Christmas in San Francisco is more than a stretch, locals and tourists queued up to skate at the Union Square Ice Rink gleefully.
Yet the commercial joy seen around Union Square wasn't contained within San Francisco's confines; it overflowed to neighboring areas like Walnut Creek's Broadway Plaza. With just hours to go, the holiday shopping frenzy was also on full display there. The sentiment among those swiping their credit cards, as Megan McAllister told ABC7 News, "Almost done. Prepared more than last year, but there's always that last-minute gift you gotta buy."
