Samuel Rappylee Bateman, the man who portrayed himself as a prophet to justify a grotesque child sexual abuse ring, has been sentenced to a half-century behind bars. The verdict was delivered by U.S. District Judge Susan M. Brnovich, ensuring 50 years of imprisonment for Bateman, followed by a lifetime of supervised release. This decision was made public yesterday, an outcome that punctuates years of manipulation and agony inflicted upon innocent victims.
The sentencing trails Bateman's April 1 guilty plea for the charges of Conspiracy to Commit Transportation of a Minor for Criminal Sexual Activity and Conspiracy to Commit Kidnapping. "Protecting the most vulnerable is our highest calling as prosecutors," United States Attorney Gary Restaino was quoted, his words a testament to the gravity of safeguarding the young and the powerless. Assisted by dedicated prosecutors and law enforcement, Restaino's team strove for expediency in their investigation and prioritized the healing of the victims, as per the United States Attorney’s Office.
According to the United States Attorney’s Office, Bateman's nefarious activities started in 2019 when he began accruing followers across Arizona, Utah, Colorado, and Nebraska. His influence was dystopian, with the followers surrendering their minor daughters and wards into hellish matrimony that allowed him to commit repeated sexual atrocities against children as young as nine years old.
FBI Phoenix Special Agent in Charge, Jose A. Perez highlighted the importance of childhood safety, Bateman's sentencing offering a glimpse of closure for those affected. "Every child should feel and be safe in their homes," expressed Perez, the emphasis on the protection of children echoing the broader commitment of the FBI. In a staggering betrayal of trust, Bateman and his cohort transported victims across state lines to facilitate their abuse until law enforcement halted their actions with his arrest in September 2022, according to the United States Attorney’s Office.
After an initial capture, Bateman continued to loom over his victims. In November 2022, he conspired to kidnap the victims from their placements, a criminal feat briefly accomplished before law enforcement intervened. Alongside Bateman, 11 of his adult followers have been found guilty of related charges. Some await sentencing, while others have already faced this phase of accountability for their participation in the conspiracy.
The inquiry leading to the legal proceedings was meticulously carried out by the FBI-Phoenix, with the United States Attorney’s Office, District of Arizona handling the prosecution.
