Long Beach police arrested a man on Thursday after he brandished what appeared to be a handgun, later identified as a pellet gun, during a confrontation with officers outside a business on Atlantic Avenue. According to NBC Los Angeles, the incident happened around 1:32 p.m. when police responded to reports of a man with a gun.
Upon arrival, officers made contact with the individual who was holding the suspected firearm. An officer discharged their weapon during the standoff. However, the suspect was not hit, surrendered shortly afterward, and was taken into custody, reported ABC7. No injuries were reported during the incident, neither to the officers present nor any bystanders.
The Long Beach Police Department confirmed that a pellet gun, which closely resembled a real handgun, was recovered at the scene. The police are reviewing body camera footage from the officers involved in the incident, which, according to the statement they released, will be made available to the public in alignment with state legislation, as detailed by the LBPD. This review is part of their standard practice following any officer-involved shooting.
While the suspect's identity has yet to be released, the Long Beach PD has assured the community that there will be a comprehensive multi-level review of the incident.
