An indictment has been brought against Roy Lee Fennell, a 44-year-old man from Lorain, concerning an incident that occurred last month at the Lorain Public Library. He faces charges of attempted murder, two counts of felonious assault, tampering with evidence, and resisting arrest, as reported by The Chronicle-Telegram.
According to Cleveland19, the Lorain County Grand Jury presented the charges following an event that occurred at approximately 2 p.m. on November 18, during which the authorities discovered the victim with severe stab wounds. The assault on the victim, who is 23 years old and has been only identified by his initials D.H., seemed unprovoked as there had been no altercation reported before the stabbing.
Lorain police officers responded to the report of an assault at the library. Upon arrival, they discovered Fennell being restrained by a library security officer while the victim lay bleeding. The security officer in question, John Merritt, received recognition for his prompt action in tackling Fennell and holding him down until police arrived. Merritt also assisted in administering first aid to the victim before emergency medical services transported him to the hospital, as noted by The Chronicle-Telegram.
The WKYC states that Fennell, currently held on a $500,000 bond in the Lorain County Jail, has a history of encounters with law enforcement, predominantly related to trespass/theft incidents. It is believed that Fennell knew the victim, although the details of their relationship are currently unclear. At the scene, officers were able to recover a knife.
The case, as of the latest reports, had not yet been assigned to a Common Pleas judge. Messages seeking comments from Fennell's appointed attorney, Maggie Lieux, were awaiting a response.
