Reflecting an urgent approach to public safety, Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass outlined significant strides made in reducing citywide crime rates and expanding emergency response capabilities. "Homicides are down and our Fire Department has expanded health and safety capability thanks to urgent action taken to keep Angelenos safe but we know many in L.A. still don’t feel safe every day – that must change," Mayor Karen Bass stated during a press conference at the Watts Labor Community Action Committee, as detailed by the Mayor's Office.
Since 2022, the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) reported more than a 25% drop in homicides and victims shot, alongside a decline in gang-related homicides by more than 50% after LAPD-led initiatives and community-based strategies, according to the Mayor's Office. The crime reduction extends to commercial and residential burglaries, with both categories seeing drops in most reporting periods since the end of August.
The Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD) has upped the ante in its health and safety response capability through the addition of Fast Response Vehicles. These smaller, nimbler units free up larger firefighting apparatus for more significant blazes and emergencies. The growth of the department's capacity was showcased as LAFD responded to both local and national emergencies, providing mutual aid for wildfires and hurricane relief efforts.
Mayor Bass's administration has also tightened the screws on organized retail crime, with the Organized Retail Crime Task Force (ORCTF) and Cargo Theft Unit (CTU) achieving hundreds of arrests and recovering over $66 million in stolen goods since their inception in August 2023. Not to be left behind, the South American Theft Task Force made substantial inroads against "crime tourism" organizations, resulting in multiple indictments and significant recovery of stolen valuables, as per the Mayor's Office.
Combating homelessness and recidivism receive attention as well, with interventions such as the Community Outreach Court (COC) assisting individuals to resolve legal matters, thus breaking down barriers to social services and housing. Meanwhile, Mayor Bass's commitment to keeping Los Angeles safe is reflected in the development of community-based strategies through the Mayor's Office of Community Safety, aiming to address social and economic factors contributing to community harm.
