The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department is investigating the 16th officer-involved shooting of 2024. The incident occurred last Sunday evening when police responded to a report of a suicidal male inside a hotel room on South Las Vegas Boulevard. Hotel security had attempted a welfare check but did not get a response. They also reportedly heard the sound of a firearm being prepared when trying to enter the room, as reported by the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department.
Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department officers responded to a situation involving a male who was unresponsive and barricaded inside a room. SWAT and crisis negotiators were called to assist in resolving the situation. After several hours, the male exited the room while armed with a long gun and charged toward officers. "Officers gave the male verbal commands to drop the gun. The male charged towards officers, causing an officer to discharge his weapon, striking the male," according to the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department. Lifesaving efforts were performed by officers until medical teams arrived, but the male was pronounced dead at the scene.
The officer's identity will be released 48 hours after the incident. The investigation is ongoing, and Captain Kurt McKenzie has shared a statement online.
