After enduring the ravages of Hurricane Helene which forced its closure, Madeira Beach Fundamental K-8 welcomed back its middle school students to the classroom today. The school, situated on the Tom Stuart Causeway, had been off-limits since September due to significant storm damage, particularly to the electrical systems caused by seawater, as reported by Bay News 9

The repairs, while substantial, are still ongoing, and thus middle school students are set to temporarily occupy the second floor and portables on campus. This comes nearly three months after the students were displaced and relocated to other schools in the county. Delighted to finally start to return to some semblance of routine, Pinellas Schools Area 3 Superintendent Dywayne Hinds expressed relief at welcoming them back, telling Bay News 9, "As students got out of their cars today, to be able to talk to them, to hear their excitement, to be back to a place they are very familiar with, it's very good."

Principal Chris Ateek also remarked on the reopening, aiming to continue focusing on academics and supporting students and families. In a Thanksgiving letter to the community obtained by FOX 13 News, he wrote, "Gratitude and thanks are the perfect reflection of what I have experienced... This has been a heavy lift. But we are Mad Strong, and we can all do hard things when it's required." The entire school body's courage and resilience throughout this hardship have been dubbed "Mad Strong" by Ateek, underscoring a spirited community rallying in the face of adversity.

Adjustments have been made to the school schedule as well. Elementary students will now begin their day at 9:45 a.m. and finish at 4 p.m., while middle school students now starts at 8:15 a.m. and end at 2:53 p.m., according to the information provided by WFLA. This change aims to accommodate the transition as the school community works to rebuild and recover fully. Chris Ateek expressed his gratitude for the patience and understanding of all involved during this period, as recounted in a statement by WFLA: "We are thankful to you all for your understanding during this transitional period and glad that the return to normalcy has begun."
