In the pre-dawn darkness of a South Fulton community, tragedy unfolded with a double shooting that claimed two lives. Police have confirmed the arrest of a man following the incident, which occurred around 3 a.m. on Wednesday in the Lakes at Cedar Grove neighborhood. While the suspect's identity remains withheld, he faces charges that include two counts of aggravated assault, two counts of possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, and two counts of murder, as reported by FOX 5 Atlanta.
According to a statement obtained by FOX 5 Atlanta, neighbors were startled by the sound of rapid gunfire that seemed to emanate from the garage of a home on the 7000 block of Bellmist Drive. "It sounded like (noise) it was really quick," recounted Shaire Buckner, a local resident. Buckner compared the incident to past experiences, expressing a grim familiarity with such violence, "This isn't the first time something like that has happened to me. So, it was like when I was younger in another neighborhood, a different state. The same thing happened. I was like, just another day, man."
The preliminary investigation hints at a "domestic" underlying cause with all involved parties knowing each other, as suggested by a police spokesperson. Buckner, commenting on the recent escalation of events leading up to the shooting, mentioned, "Over the last three weeks it was just a bunch of commotion."FOX 5 Atlanta detailed Buckner's observations of the neighborhood, which is usually quiet, noting an uptick in disturbances at the specific residence including a recent fight outside the property.
While details on the circumstances that preceded the double homicide remain sparse, both male victims were acquainted with the suspect, according to 11Alive. Buckner also told FOX 5 Atlanta about erratic patterns of visitors at the home, stating, "People walking the street going in, random people going there all the time. Not consistent, it was two consistent people that were kind of staying there, I think. But it'll be just random people going in and out of house at different times." The investigation continues, and authorities have assured the public that updates will follow as more information becomes available.
