An officer-involved shooting in north Phoenix has left one man dead following a confrontation at a local fast food restaurant. According to AZ Family, police were called to the scene near 28th Avenue and Thunderbird Road around 11:15 a.m. yesterday. Witnesses report an armed man had entered the establishment, prompting a swift evacuation of employees and patrons.

After setting up a perimeter around the restaurant, the individual began firing shots, leading to a tense exchange with law enforcement. Sgt. Brian Bowers, in a statement obtained by AZ Family, said, "There were several bullets that were fired by the suspect in all different directions." While attempting to surround the restaurant, officers encouraged the man to surrender, which the suspect refused, opening fire on officers who later returned gunfire.

Video footage captured bullet holes puncturing the front windows of the Whataburger as the incident unfolded. Bowers confirmed to FOX 10 Phoenix that the gunfire lasted several minutes, and by approximately 11:40 a.m., a shootout had begun between police and the suspect. The area was heavily cordoned off to facilitate the ensuing investigation.

The suspect was pronounced dead inside the restaurant shortly after the exchange. Freeway traffic cameras showed over a dozen patrol vehicles and tactical positioning of officers at the strip mall, as noted by AZ Family. Authorities have confirmed there were no other injuries despite the chaotic scene.

Thankful for no additional casualties, E.G. Anderson, a local resident, conveyed her relief in an interview with AZ Family, "Thank god that he didn’t really kill nobody inside of the Whataburger. And that’s just a blessing." Anderson, who lives next to the restaurant, didn't hear the gunshots but was alerted to the shooting through a neighborhood app.

While Thunderbird Road was closed from 31st Avenue to Interstate 17 as part of the investigation, it has since been reopened. This incident has been officially categorized as the 54th officer-involved shooting in Maricopa County and the 90th in the state in 2024.
