Man with Bat Shot by Las Vegas Police During Early Morning Disturbance on Cobb LaneSource: Google Street View

Las Vegas saw significant police activity early last Thursday morning after reports of a man with a bat. The incident took place on Cobb Lane and involved 46-year-old Luis Sanchez-Gomez, who was said to be acting aggressively toward local residents and their property. Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department Assistant Sheriff Jamie Prosser provided details about the situation in a briefing.

Officers responded to a call early in the morning and found Sanchez-Gomez wrapped in a blanket in the street. Attempts to contain the situation peacefully were unsuccessful, and Sanchez-Gomez moved to nearby businesses, causing damage. When he advanced while armed, officers had to adjust their approach to manage the situation, as reported by the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department.

In a confrontation captured on camera, officers gave verbal orders for Sanchez-Gomez to drop what appeared to be a bat, but he did not comply. Officers then deployed non-lethal bean bag rounds to subdue him. When Sanchez-Gomez advanced toward the officers with weapons in hand, Officers Justin Lee and Victor Robinson fired their service weapons, striking him. Afterward, Sanchez-Gomez produced a knife, and officers continued using non-lethal force to keep him incapacitated until he could be safely arrested. He was transported to UMC Hospital in critical condition. For more details, see the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department press release.
