A man was injured following a shooting that erupted on Canal Street in Manhattan's Lower SoHo district yesterday. The incident, which left the victim with a gunshot wound to the back, occurred around 1 p.m. near the intersection of Canal and Greene streets, as reported by the 1010 WINS.
Despite the immediate response from local law enforcement, the gunman managed to evade capture, reportedly fleeing south on Church Street and possibly disappearing into the depths of a nearby subway station. The victim, a 21-year-old male, was swiftly transported to NYC Health + Hospitals/Bellevue, where, he is expected to recover from his injuries according to police statements.
As investigators combed through the clues, a man on the block, who spoke to Gothamist, described the shooter as "paranoid," adding a layer of complexity to the already murky circumstances that led up to the shooting. In the same source, Idy Saurr, a local vendor of African goods, expressed his belief that the unlucky individual may have been without a home.
Ken Patel, a decade-long owner of a nearby smoke and convenience shop, confided that he was jarred by the silence that preceded the gunshot, telling Gothamist he did not hear "any arguing or yelling" before that fateful sound rang out. This sentiment resonates with the low crime statistics of the NYPD's 1st Precinct, encompassing the area, where shootings and homicides remain relatively rare occurrences.
