A 37-year-old Flanders man died early Sunday after a pickup truck struck him while he was crossing Flanders Road, according to Southampton Town police. Wayne Conforti Jr. was walking near the lighted intersection of Oak Avenue at approximately 1:30 a.m. when a westbound 2016 Toyota Tacoma hit him in the roadway.
Conforti suffered serious physical injuries in the crash and was transported to Peconic Bay Medical Center in Riverhead, where he was pronounced dead, according to Daily Voice. The Toyota Tacoma driver was not injured. Southampton Town police say the driver had passed through the Oak Avenue intersection before the collision, and detectives are still investigating exactly how the crash unfolded.
Responders from the Flanders Northampton Volunteer Ambulance Corps treated Conforti at the scene alongside police before he was rushed to the hospital, while detectives from the Southampton Town Police Department's Community Response Unit opened a full crash investigation, as reported by Patch. Peconic Bay Medical Center operates the only Level III Trauma Center on Long Island's North Fork and serves as the primary emergency facility for Eastern Suffolk County, according to Northwell Health. Police impounded the Tacoma for a safety check, a step authorized under New York Vehicle and Traffic Law § 301-A, which allows investigators to re-inspect vehicles involved in serious or fatal crashes to determine whether mechanical defects played a role.
A Familiar, Deadly Stretch of Road
This is not the first fatal pedestrian crash on this corridor in recent memory. Less than a year earlier, in October 2025, another pedestrian was fatally struck while crossing Flanders Road near Bayview Lane in Flanders and was also pronounced dead at Peconic Bay Medical Center, the same account notes. That same month, a separate hit-and-run pedestrian fatality was reported on Flanders Road near Vail Avenue in neighboring Riverside, according to RiverheadLOCAL.
The road, also known as NYS Route 24, has drawn scrutiny from local officials for years. Following multiple pedestrian crashes along Flanders Road, the New York State Department of Transportation evaluated the corridor in 2017 and determined it did not meet criteria for state-funded traffic control modifications, prompting Southampton Town to independently fund additional overhead street lighting through its local lighting district, per the Riverhead News Review. The road has also seen grassroots safety advocacy, including prominent roadside signs erected by a local family following a fatal 2014 crash involving a distracted utility driver.
Suffolk's Broader Traffic Toll
Conforti's death adds to a grim countywide pattern. Suffolk County recorded 143 fatal traffic collisions in 2023, more than double Nassau County's total, and maintained the highest traffic fatality rate among New York's 20 most populous counties at 10.2 deaths per 100,000 residents, according to a Greater Long Island report citing Newsday data. A separate long-term Newsday analysis found that vehicular crashes killed more than 2,100 people and seriously injured over 16,000 across Nassau and Suffolk counties between 2014 and 2023.
News of Conforti's death spread quickly among friends and family, who shared their grief online. One friend wrote online, “Rest in peace Wayne Conforti my best friend my brother.” Southampton Town police say the investigation into the crash remains active, and no charges have been announced.
