In a chilling twist following the murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson last week, "Wanted" posters with the images of high-profile health insurance executives have emerged across Manhattan. These disturbing visuals bear not only the executives' photos but also grave warnings, with one sign prominently stating, "HEALTH CARE CEOS SHOULD NOT FEEL SAFE" - a message that is ratcheting up tensions and fear within the industry. The campaign appears to be a fear-mongering tactic, with no evidence of an actual hit list, sources told The New York Post.
Responding to a palpable increase in hostility towards health care executives, the NYPD has issued a bulletin warning of a heightened risk environment for these individuals. The bulletin references the aforementioned signs and goes on to describe a social media ecosystem where Thompson's suspected killer, Luigi Mangione, is being viewed by some as a modern-day martyr—with the potential to inspire extremists to action. This comes even after Mangione's arrest in Pennsylvania on charges including second-degree murder. According to ABC News, the bulletin also highlighted posts sharing the names and salaries of various health insurance CEOs, suggesting the lists were perceived by some online users as cue for further violence.
Surveillance videos show the posters prominently displayed on public structures such as scaffolding and green boxes; one placed on the corner of Canal Street and Centre Street in Lower Manhattan featured a red X over Thompson's face, as detailed by ABC News. In a darker vein, other posters featuring Optum CEO Heather Cianfrocco and UnitedHealth CEO Andrew Witty were also spotted, echoing the grim sentiment throughout the financial district. Symbols resembling bullets accompanied text on the posters, with one pointed message reading, "UnitedHealthcare killed everyday people for the sake of profit. As a result Brian Thompson was denied his claim to life. Who will be denied next?"
Public reaction has varied, with some online comments exhibiting a disturbing sense of approval over Thompson's death. The NYPD bulletin referred to one individual’s online statement, "My mom was denied chemo multiple times and suffered tremendously they missed her cancer for two years because she was constantly denied… she will have life altering damage because of it. F*** him may he rest in piss," capturing an undercurrent of deep-seated resentment toward those at the helm of health insurance companies. An aggravated Reddit user echoed this sentiment, arguing, "The politicians are compromised and the corporations are suffocating us - all CEO's should be considered. Sucks when your government is bought by these CEO's who immediately impact the masses," as per insight from ABC News.
Following the emergence and subsequent viral spread of these 'wanted' posters, the posters found on Canal Street were removed today. However, despite these efforts to cleanse the visual landscape of its recent ominous turn, the NYPD has urged companies to increase security measures for their executives, recognizing the serious and unpredictable nature of the threat they now face.
