In Maple Grove, a routine traffic stop spiraled into a harrowing chase that resulted in a DWI suspect striking two squad cars before his apprehension. According to a social media post by the Carver County Sheriff's Office, the incident occurred around 9:30pm on Thursday when an officer stopped a vehicle driving the wrong direction on Yellow Brick Rd. Initially, the driver had pulled into an Arby's drive-thru, neglecting the imminent danger behind his reckless steering, begun ordering food as if the brush with disaster were merely an untimely interruption to his evening's quest for fast food.
The encounter escalated after the officer initiated a DWI investigation upon noting signs of the driver's impairment. Defying instructions to exit his vehicle, the driver instead bolted, careening over curbs, and tearing through grassy verges to reenter public streets. In the process of his flight, has the suspect collided with two law enforcement vehicles. His ill-conceived escape concluded with his vehicle disabled after it crashed into several unoccupied vehicles on Stoughton Ave, around 2.5 miles from the initial fast-food waypoint.
As per the Sheriff's Office, the driver sustained minor injuries, receiving treatment at a local hospital before a subsequent booking into Carver County jail. The litany of charges against him includes 1st and 2nd degree assault, driving while impaired, along with fleeing a peace officer in a motor vehicle. Pending the outcome of a urine sample obtained via search warrant, further legal ramifications for the driver are possible.
In the words of the Sheriff's Office, it was an "eye opening example of the commitment our officers exemplify to keep our community safe while putting their lives in danger." Fortunately, in this instance, no other members of the public came to harm, though the potential for such was undeniably present throughout the ordeal. Portions of the chaos were captured on the officer's dash camera, now part of evidence detailing the nocturnal disruption.
