In a major crackdown on human trafficking, Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel has announced the arrest of individuals linked to an international ring allegedly operating through illicit massage parlors in Wayne, and Macomb Counties. This operation embarked upon in coordination with federal Homeland Securities Investigations (HSI) and local Michigan law enforcement, is considered one of the largest of its kind in the state's history.
Initiated in the summer, the extensive investigation led to coordinated raids and arrests yesterday. During the day's operations, law enforcement officers succeeded in liberating seven to nine women, of Chinese and Korean origin, rescuing them from conditions consistent with human trafficking. Among the locations targeted were 111 Healing Studio in St. Clair Shores, AM Healing Studio in Sterling Heights, Magic Health Spa in Detroit, and 8 Star in Detroit. As per the Michigan Attorney General's office, Nessel praised the collaborative effort saying, "These arrests, the takedown of four illicit massage parlors, and the liberation of these victims of human trafficking today in our communities were the result of an awesome effort by several law enforcement agencies."
Key figures arrested include Jingyu Jin, a 45-year-old Chinese national, and several others, with charges ranging from conducting a criminal enterprise to money laundering. In a concerted statement, HSI Detroit Special Agent Angie M. Salazar emphasized the commitment to combatting crimes of trafficking and exploitation. She gave assurance that HSI will persist in employing its global reach to break down trafficking operations that affect the state of Michigan, and beyond.
The individuals arrested face a range of serious felonies, with potential sentences stretching up to 20 years. The 40th District Court in St. Clair Shores will see the prosecution of Jingyu Jin, Oumar Lougue, and Jon Villasurda, whereas Ming Li and Huazi Piao will face the 36th District Court in Detroit. Arraignments are anticipated to follow in the days to come, which will begin the process of bringing the accused to justice, and further uncover the depths of this international human trafficking network.
