The County of Maui has announced its schedule for the upcoming holiday season, confirming that various offices, services, and facilities will be taking a break to observe Christmas and New Year's Day. If you're planning to handle any county-related business, take note: you'll need to mark your calendar for some closures and modified hours. It's all in line with the general slowing down that happens this time of year, as even government functions pause to let people celebrate.

On Wednesday, December 25 in celebration for Christmas, and then again on Wednesday, January 1 for New Year's Day, the county's doing the usual shutdown routine. Here's the rundown: county offices, all county pools, Office of Recovery – West Maui located in the Lahaina Gateway, and the Recovery Permit Center at the County of Maui Service Center in Kahului will all be closed, according to a press release from the Maui County website. But don't forget the landfills – Hāna, Moloka‘i, and Lāna‘i landfills will join in on the closures, along with the Olowalu Recycling & Refuse Convenience Center.

It's not a total shutdown, though. For those looking to dispose of their holiday waste, the Central Maui Landfill and Maui EKO Compost are playing nice with condensed holiday hours, open from 6 a.m. to noon on both December 25, 2024, and January 1, 2025. And there’s some more good news for local residents: residential trash pickup will continue without a hiccup, and Maui Bus riders can breathe easy knowing their schedules are staying put without any holiday interruptions.

The Kākoʻo Maui Resource Centers, both in Kahului and at the Office of Recovery – West Maui, are taking off on Christmas Eve, December 24, and on New Year’s Eve, December 31, in addition to the already specified dates. Regular business hours will resume the days following each holiday, on Thursday, December 26, and Thursday, January 2. So, if you've got business with the county, you're set once those dates roll by.
