As winter break rolls in, Mayor Muriel Bowser, alongside the Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR), is poised to greatly enrich the holiday season for DC's youth with a spread of activities slated from December 21 through December 31. The initiatives, backed by various District agencies, are crafted to safely engage children and teenagers, offering a breadth of community-centered events to help encourage social connections during the school hiatus.
To kick-start the festivities, the Fort Stevens Recreation Center will be hosting a Community Toy Giveaway on December 21, in a heartwarming morning mingle laden with toy distribution and hot cocoa, according to the Mayor's announcement. In a similar vein but with a cinematic twist, a Movie Field Trip will be cherry-picking kids to watch "Sonic 3", with details on locations for pickup readily available upon registration. The day shall also see Grinchmas celebration at Kenilworth and a Community Christmas Extravaganza at Rosedale geared to distribute not just toys but also essential commodities.
Continuing the series of events, a festive gathering dubbed 'Holiday Hype' will take place at the MLK Library, inviting individuals of all ages to revel in seasonal cheer. The following day, the Deanwood Community Center aims to combine athleticism and altruism, executing a Youth Basketball Tournament flanked by a Santa picture booth, entertainment, and toy giveaways. Additionally, water enthusiasts can relish in activities like Water Cycle and Aqua Fitness at the Ferebee-Hope Aquatic Center.
Gaming aficionados will not to be left wanting, with an array of eSports and gaming tournaments spanning through the winter break, including an eSports Throwback & Brawlhalla Tournament, eSports 2K24 Tournament, and a Winter E-Gaming Tournament, details of which can be found through the DPR links. Meanwhile, for those inclined toward song and cinema, 'Holiday Sing-Along' and 'Holiday Movie Night' create avenues to unbridled joy and shared experiences.
Teenagers, in search of camaraderie, can converge on Teen Time sessions promising games, art, and sports. The health conscious have a chance to partake in lifeguard training programs, grooming the next generation of lifeguards at various aquatic centers. Lastly, for the youth aged between 6 and12, limited slots for a three-day Winter Wondercamp maybe still grabbable, as urged by Mayor Bowser’s office to register promptly. To cap it off, DPR’s indoor pools warmly welcome families across the District for free swim, signaling the availability across multiple locations on the official DPR website.
