A 55-year-old woman named Lara Kay Tebelius and her dog tragically died after they were struck by a vehicle last night in McCandless. The incident occurred at the Harmony Drive and Highland Road intersection, according to a release by the Allegheny County Medical Examiner's office earlier this morning. TribLive reported that Tebelius was quickly transported to the hospital, where she succumbed to her injuries a short time later.
No additional information has been made available concerning the driver or the vehicle involved in the accident, and there seem to have been no charges filed as investigations are ongoing. The driver of the car involved did stay on the scene and cooperated with authorities, WTAE noted in its coverage of the incident.
Residents in the area are expressing their concerns about the safety of that particular intersection. Larry Nugent, who lives nearby and was out walking the following morning, relayed to WTAE his view on the inherent risks for pedestrians, stating, "For those that continue walking, we just need to be aware of what we're doing and make sure we know the traffic is coming and keep our eyes on the traffic. If it gets too close, you got to move over."
