As the holiday spirit engulfs the city, Mecklenburg County is ensuring that their homebound seniors are not left behind in the merriment. A dedicated band of volunteers, alongside county staff, gathered to assemble holiday gift bags aimed at brightening the season for seniors unable to participate in the usual festivities. According to Mecklenburg County, the initiative saw the assembly of about 1,250 gift bags filled with fresh fruits, hot chocolate, a festive candy cane, and an activity packet to stimulate the mind.

Held at Weeping Willow AME Zion Church's gymnasium in east Charlotte, the effort saw diverse volunteers, ranging from corporate employees to local sorority members, come together in a show of community solidarity. After the packaging was done, these gift bags destined for homebound seniors, were loaded onto county vans for the delivery slated for this week.

"The gift bags demonstrate to our seniors that they are all special and someone is thinking about them during this holiday period," Kajal Patel, the program manager, conveyed in a statement. Under Patel's leadership, the Senior Citizens Nutrition Program provides not only meals but also opportunities for socialization to residents over the age of 60. The program extends beyond delivered meals to include congregate services and a mobile market, as per Mecklenburg County.

The coalition of volunteers featured representatives from Bank of America, Atrium Health, CenterWell Senior Primary Care, AARP, the Frankie Mae Foundation, and members from Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. Psi Mu Zeta Chapter in Charlotte, according to the event details. By bringing to bear their time and energy, this mix of volunteers manifested the season's ethos of giving and care.
