As cold weather grips the Mid-South, Memphis has activated an emergency warming center to offer respite from the freezing temperatures to those in need. The warming center is located at the Hospitality Hub at 590 Washington Avenue and opened its doors yesterday at 9 p.m., according to Action News 5. It plans to remain operational until this morning at 9 a.m. The initiative responds to weather forecasts predicting temperatures in the low 20s.
Recognizing the urgency of the situation, the City of Memphis has ensured the warming center is equipped to support single men, single women, and families and even provides a limited number of kennels for service animals, as reported by FOX13 Memphis. The facility offers basic amenities such as meals and blankets; however, supplies are limited. Individuals who require transportation to the facility can contact the Hospitality Hub at 901-297-1680 to arrange a ride starting at 8:30 p.m.
While the warming center is an immediate response to the impending cold, city officials are reminding residents that it does not replace the full services provided by local shelters. Those seeking more comprehensive aid, including food assistance or overnight sleeping accommodations, are directed toward Union Mission and MIFA for support. Union Mission can be reached at 901-526-8403 and MIFA at 901-529-4545, where openings are currently available for those in need, Local Memphis reported.
