A grim discovery in Mesquite, Texas, has led to the arrest of two parents on charges of capital murder. Last Friday, local authorities responded to a distressing call involving an unresponsive 9-month-old child. The Mesquite Police Department reported that upon arrival, Fire Department personnel found the infant deceased, exhibiting clear signs of severe malnutrition.
As the investigation unfolded, the father of the child, Leon Johnson, a 22-year-old resident of Mesquite, was taken into custody under the grave charge of capital murder of a person under 10 years of age. According to the Mesquite Police Department's press release, the investigation further implicated the mother, Destiny Avila, age 23, in the child's death, leading to her also being charged with capital murder.
The case has highlighted a disturbing situation where a child suffered due to the alleged inaction of both parents, who did not live together but shared custody in the weeks before the tragedy. Authorities pointed out that the child's emaciated state was indicative of the distress experienced before death.
