The City of Mesquite is taking a firm stance to ensure the safety of its residents as they prepare to usher in the New Year. With 2025 on the horizon, local officials are emphasizing the importance of celebration without compromising safety or legality.

Intoxicated driving remains a high-cost issue, both financially and in terms of human life. To curb these tragedies, the Mesquite Police Department plans to substantially increase its presence on New Year's Eve, adding to perpetually trying and enforce DWI laws. According to a statement by the City of Mesquite, "Driving while intoxicated (DWI) is costly in many ways. Besides causing injuries and loss of life, DWI can result in thousands of dollars in fines, possible jail time and driver’s licenses being revoked."

The enforcement comes in the wake of harrowing statistics published by the Texas Department of Transportation. In 2023, Texas roads were stained by the loss of 1,090 lives due to drivers under the influence of alcohol or drugs, accounting for a staggering 25 percent of the state's traffic-related fatalities.

To combat other hazardous behaviors, the city reiterates the illegality of fireworks and the danger of celebratory gunfire. Specialized police and fire department teams are getting ready to strictly enforce the prohibition of fireworks and to respond rapidly to firearm discharge on New Year's Eve. This reflects the city's zero-tolerance stance on activities that pose risks to the community. Effective enforcement hinges on citizens' cooperation, thus they're encouraged to report violations utilizing various contact methods such as the myMesquite app, the city's website, and specific hotlines for non-emergency and DWI activity, as outlined in the City of Mesquite's official statement.
