An incident last night left drivers near Pittsburgh's Squirrel Hill Tunnel reeling as metal debris scattered across the road punctured the tires of 26 vehicles. WPXI reported that the Pennsylvania State Police confirmed the damages and the subsequent cleanup, although how the debris ended up near the tunnel is currently unknown.
The vehicular chaos unfolded in the early evening just as drivers took to the Parkway East. Not far from the scene, near the Churchill exit, a procession of cars sidelined by the unexpected road hazard became a common sight. According to WTAE, "I was told that I hit a pretty large sewer grate or something coming off the exit," driver Kelby Haskins said on the scene. "Me, with about 10 others behind, did the same."
The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) quickly addressed the situation, citing metal debris as the culprit for the sudden spike in flat tires. They confirmed the count of 26 affected drivers—an unfortunate statistic for those whose evening commutes were unexpectedly upended.
