In a recent crackdown on illegal firearms within the district, the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) has reported a significant haul. Over the course of a week, from December 9 through last Monday, MPD officers and detectives have recovered no fewer than 59 firearms from various locations throughout Washington, D.C.
These recoveries are a part of ongoing efforts by the MPD to curb gun crime and enhance public safety, often with the use of intelligence-based policing to pinpoint armed offenders. Recoveries included a range of firearms, from handguns such as a Taurus G2C 9mm to more fearsome artillery like the Radical Firearms RF-15 .556 caliber assault rifle. Carried out by patrol officers and specialized units, the operations led to multiple arrests on a spectrum of charges, including assault with a dangerous weapon and possession of unregistered firearms, reported by MPD.
Among the noteworthy seizures was a "Ghost Gun" handgun, which poses a unique challenge for law enforcement due to its lack of a serial number, making it difficult to trace. The MPD is working relentlessly to get these types of illegal firearms, along with others, off the streets in order to alleviate the fear of crime that burdens the community.
The MPD extends gratitude to community members who have aided these efforts. The Department continues to encourage residents to report any information they might have about illegal firearms. Anonymous tips can be made through MPD's tip line at 202-727-9099 or sent via the TEXT TIP LINE by messaging 50411. In a measure designed to encourage community cooperation, rewards of up to $2,500 are offered for tips leading to arrests and gun seizures.
