Motorists in Michigan are receiving a slight financial reprieve as gas prices fall ahead of the 2025 New Year, with recent reports from AAA highlighting a statewide average price of $3.03 per gallon for regular unleaded fuel. This marks a seven-cent decrease from the previous week and an eight-cent decline from last month’s average, as noted by The Detroit News. The small reduction means that filling a standard 15-gallon gas tank now costs Michigan drivers about $45, a sum that provides modest savings for those gearing up for year-end travels.

Adrienne Woodland, spokesperson for AAA, emphasized the downward trend, saying, "Michigan drivers are seeing lower pump prices heading into the new year." As per WZZM 13, she further suggested, "If demand drops, alongside increasing supply, gas prices could continue to fall."

The recent report from the Detroit Free Press also indicated that AAA’s analysis shows consistency with the national average, which equally stands at $3.03 a gallon. Even with the current dip, however, prices remain 11 cents higher than they were at the same period in the previous year. Across different cities in Michigan, prices vary, with Ann Arbor and Jackson seeing the highest average at $3.05 a gallon and cheaper fuel found in Traverse City at $2.88 a gallon.

Looking forward, Patrick De Haan, a gas analyst with GasBuddy, offered tempered optimism in a WZZM 13 interview, suggesting, "It's looking like a potential better year for motorists at the pump, although there are some risks." Mentioning the possibility of policy changes such as tariffs on Canadian products that could affect gasoline costs, De Haan encouraged drivers to seek out the best fuel prices through resources like GasBuddy, Waze, or Google before traveling. Despite the encouraging trends, the forecast for the upcoming year acknowledges a degree of uncertainty with the potential for gas price volatility.
