On Tuesday, Michigan residents aged 21 to 24 must submit their applications for tuition-free community college through Michigan Reconnect. The program covers in-district tuition and offers a discounted rate for out-of-district students, supporting affordable education and career growth, as reported by WILX.
According to Detroit Free Press, the program requires participants to meet several eligibility criteria: they must be Michigan residents for at least one year, hold a high school diploma or equivalent, and not have previously earned a college degree. So far, over 42,261 applications have been submitted from Wayne County, with 5,595 degrees or certificates awarded. Applicants can track their status through the MiSSG Student Portal, which streamlines the process.
The Detroit Chamber states that to benefit from Michigan Reconnect, eligible candidates must apply, enroll in a community or Tribal college, and file a FAFSA by Summer 2025. Students already in college must also apply. The program is available to individuals aged 25 and older, even beyond the December deadline. Michigan Reconnect aims to make higher education more accessible and support workforce development for lifelong learners.
