A 62-year-old Detroit man died after being stabbed multiple times inside a Hazel Park home on Labor Day, and police arrested a 60-year-old Detroit man at the scene as the suspected killer. Officers were dispatched around 5:20 p.m. Monday to a home in the 1600 block of East Granet Avenue, where they found the victim suffering life-threatening injuries following what sources described as an argument.
According to ClickOnDetroit, sources indicated the suspect was the victim's girlfriend's brother. The victim died while first responders attempted to treat his wounds, according to police cited by The Oakland Press. Police said there is no ongoing risk to the public and that they are not seeking any additional suspects.
The stabbing marks Hazel Park's second reported homicide of 2026, per the same account. The first came on August 3, when a man was shot and killed inside his home during the afternoon — Hazel Park's first homicide of the year, as previously reported by ClickOnDetroit. Both of the city's 2026 homicides have now occurred inside private residences during interpersonal disputes.
A Grim Echo of Last Year's Labor Day Tragedy
The timing carries an unsettling parallel for Hazel Park residents. Almost exactly one year earlier, on Labor Day 2025, 41-year-old Linda Hill and her 12-year-old son Kardi Jackson were fatally stabbed inside their Berdeno Avenue home, a case that led to first-degree murder charges against the woman's brother, according to CBS News Detroit. Countywide, the violence is part of a larger, grim tally. Oakland County has recorded 22 deaths attributed to homicide in 2026, including 12 since July 1, according to the Oakland Press report. It remains unclear what specific formal charges, if any, will be filed against the 60-year-old suspect arrested in this week's stabbing, or whether prosecutors will pursue the case under Michigan's open murder statute, which allows homicide charges to be filed without specifying degree at arraignment, leaving it to the court or a jury to determine whether an offense rises to first-degree or second-degree murder, per Kershaw, Vititoe & Jedinak, PLC.
A Small Department Facing a Violent Stretch
Hazel Park is a compact, 2.82-square-mile inner-ring suburb along the 8 Mile Road border with Detroit, home to roughly 14,937 residents, according to U.S. Census Bureau estimates. The Hazel Park Police Department, established in 1942, operates with more than 30 full-time sworn officers and about 10 civilian support staff, per the department's own records.
This year has tested that small force. In May, Hazel Park police responded to a fatal shooting during an after-prom party at an Orchard and Powell home that left one person dead and another injured, as reported by FOX 2 Detroit. In July, ClickOnDetroit reported that a 30-year-old Hazel Park man pleaded no contest in a separate double fatal shooting at a Detroit gas station. The department also participates in the multi-agency Oakland County Auto Theft Unit alongside Southfield and Detroit police, a task force named Michigan's top auto theft unit in 2025, as Hoodline has reported.
