Michigan is aiming gun violence with a call for partnerships to intervene. Starting on January 6, 2025, the Michigan State Police's (MSP) Grants and Community Services Division (GCSD) will be open for business, ready to accept grant applications. These grants are a leg up as part of the Byrne State Crisis Intervention Program (Byrne SCIP), channeling federal efforts to stem the tide of violence. In the words of the Michigan State Police, this initiative "furthers the U.S. Department of Justice, Bureau of Justice Assistance mission of achieving safer communities."
The upcoming grants aren't for just anyone—they require a joint effort between units of government and community-based organizations. Those interested can mark their calendars for December 4, 2024, for an informative webinar that could clear up any questions about the application process. The window for applications won't stay open forever; submission deadlines are set for February 14, 2025, just before the stroke of noon EST, as per the Michigan State Police.
With Michigan’s neighborhoods in the balance, the prioritization of violence intervention programs is paramount. Education on the matter, particularly focused on reducing gun violence, stands to receive a boost through these efforts. Every grant carried out, beginning April 1, 2025, follows an authorization period stretching all the way through to December 31, 2026.
