A fatal officer-involved shooting that occurred on Christmas Eve in Middletown has resulted in the identification of the deceased by the Butler County coroner. The man who lost his life at the scene has been named as 50-year-old Christopher Gorak of Middletown, as stated in reports by WLWT.
Authorities were summoned to an apartment at 1004 Park Lane shortly after 7 p.m. due to a disturbance involving two males. Officers from the Middletown Police Department announced themselves upon arrival and were confronted by an individual who reportedly opened the door brandishing a weapon. Following this, an officer discharged their weapon, leading to Gorak's death, as detailed by WHIO.
The incident, which marks the first officer-involved shooting since the Middletown Police Department implemented a body camera program this past summer, was described by a local resident as notably tragic, especially occurring on Christmas. "That's the first time I've heard anything crazy happening so close to home," Garrick McLaughlin noted, as per WLWT.
The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation (BCI) has been summoned to conduct an in-depth inquiry into the shooting. "This is always very, very difficult. Nobody. No police officer wants to be put in that situation," explained Dan Hils, president of Front Line Advisors, representing the Middletown Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 36. Hils confirmed the death of the armed suspect, asserting that the officer had to fire his weapon to protect himself in statements to FOX19.
