The repercussions of a high-speed pursuit and officer-involved shooting on Milwaukee's Interstate 43 earlier this year continue to unfold, with 17-year-old Tyrone Rogers receiving a sentence of over seven years in prison. As reported by the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, the sentencing took place on Thursday, with Milwaukee County Circuit Judge Jorge Fragoso presiding over the case. Rogers' guilty plea to charges including armed robbery and first-degree reckless endangering safety came in November.
The chain of events leading to Rogers' sentencing began on June 20, when a stolen white Chevrolet SUV was identified by an officer near 17th and Vliet in Milwaukee. According to FOX6 News, the SUV, engaged in a high-speed chase, almost hit a pedestrian and forced another vehicle to drive onto a curb before merging onto I-43 northbound. The pursuit rapidly escalated, creating a dangerous situation for both the suspects and the public.
Others involved in the case are facing their own legal battles. Calveyon Jeans, the driver of the SUV during the chase, sustained injuries from the police shooting along with his pregnant girlfriend, Ashley Patterson. Unfortunately, Patterson's injuries were life-threatening and resulted in the termination of her pregnancy. As relayed by WTMJ, a firearm belonging to a Waukesha County sheriff’s deputy was found in the stolen vehicle, linked to Jeans and another passenger, 17-year-old Semira Dean, who admitted to stealing the gun from the officer’s personal vehicle earlier in September.
While Rogers begins his time behind bars, the legal processes for the other individuals involved are still ongoing. Patterson has pled not guilty and awaits her sentencing hearing on Feb. 13. Jeans has a status hearing set for Thursday. Dean is facing multiple charges, with a status conference scheduled for Jan. 16. Not all of the teens involved were charged in adult court; two others, a 16-year-old boy and a 15-year-old girl, were arrested at the scene but have not been prosecuted as adults, possibly due to their age.
