After weeks of uncertainty and a search that captured the attention of both the local community and the national media, Hannah Kobayashi, the 30-year-old woman from Maui, Hawaii, has been found safe. Her family confirmed the news in statements released to various outlets. In their plea for privacy, the family remarked, "We are incredibly relieved and grateful that Hannah has been found safe," as per a statement obtained by FOX 11. They also extended their "heartfelt thanks to everyone who supported us during this difficult time."
Details around Kobayashi's disappearance remain unanswered but what is known is, after landing at Los Angeles International Airport on November 8, she missed her connecting flight to New York City. Eyewitness News reported that police later believed she purposefully missed her flight and independently traveled across the border into Mexico. This period was punctuated by tragedy when her father, Ryan Kobayashi, was discovered dead near LAX in a suspected suicide.
Speculations around her intentions and well-being were rampant, with her aunt, Larie Pidgeon, expressing grave concern over cryptic messages received from Kobayashi, which raised alarm about her safety. "Things started to get nefarious and scary on Monday when it went from 'I can't see you. I'm so excited,' to texts about people stealing her identity," Pidgeon revealed in an interview with CBS News Los Angeles.
The situation has drawn a complex picture of grief, confusion, and relief. While Kobayashi has made contact with her family, the circumstances regarding her disappearance and the subsequent events that unfolded remain cloaked in a measure of mystery. Her family's lawyer stated, "This past month has been an unimaginable ordeal for our family, and we kindly ask for privacy as we take the time to heal and process everything we have been through," as per CBS News Los Angeles.
