During the busy "Black Friday" weekend, the Modesto Police Department carried out an enforcement campaign that resulted in 34 arrests related to organized retail theft. According to the Modesto Police Department on their Facebook page, this is an increase from the 26 arrests made during the same period last year. The initiative was supported by a grant from the State of California BSCC aimed at addressing organized retail theft.
Modesto's Property Crimes Unit, working with local merchants, has made arrests to stop theft during the busy holiday season, supported by a grant. The Police Department is using the slogan "Not in Modesto" to warn against theft. Sgt. Mike Hicks said, "The goal of these operations to hold offenders accountable for their actions, while increasing the safety to our community who want to go out an enjoy what our businesses have to offer during the holiday season," and highlighted a "zero-tolerance" approach to keep the community safe, as reported by the Modesto Police Department.
Last year, 116 people were arrested in similar operations. This year, 34 arrests have been made so far. The police are working with local retailers and the District Attorney’s Office to help fight retail crime. The enforcement will continue through New Year's, with more police presence to deter theft. Updates will follow as the campaign continues, as stated by the Modesto Police Department.
