Montgomery County Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) just kicked off its annual Gift Outside the Box campaign. The initiative is set to inspire residents to celebrate sustainably by choosing environmentally friendly gifts and supporting local businesses.
County Executive Marc Elrich was keen to highlight the dual purpose of the campaign, noting in a press release, "As we celebrate the holiday season, the annual Gift Outside the Box campaign is a reminder that we can show love and generosity while also caring for our planet." He emphasized “By choosing greener gifts, supporting local businesses and reducing waste, we make a meaningful impact on the environment and our community. Small changes add up, and together, we can create a more sustainable future—one thoughtful gift at a time.”
This year's drive is offering tangible change with five key focus areas: buying local, gifting experiences, greening gifts, giving back, and the three R's – reduce, reuse, recycle. By buying locally, residents not only reduce fuel consumption but also bolster Montgomery County's economy. For those who prefer experiential gifts, the campaign suggests classes, workshops, and event tickets to create memories. In the spirit of reducing waste, the initiative prompts thoughtful planning in online shopping to minimize delivery impact and packaging.
Another core pillar of the campaign is to give back. Whether it's donating to local charities or volunteering with loved ones, the DEP wants to ensure that this festive season is also about community spirit. DEP staff are set to actively engage the community, doling out free reusable bags and offering lightbulb exchanges on two upcoming weekends at Westfield Wheaton and Montgomery Malls, according to the official press release.
The initiative is also a response to a stark statistic from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, which states that household waste increases by a staggering 25 percent between Thanksgiving and New Year's Day. With this in mind, DEP Director Jon Monger told the press, "In a world where every choice we make has an impact, the Gift Outside the Box campaign is not just about the present." He elaborated on the campaign's wider goals by stressing that every action counts toward a sustainable future, as noted by Montgomery County's official website.
Residents keen to share their green gift ideas or take inspiration from others can turn to social media, using the hashtag #GiftGreener. For more environmentally friendly lifestyle tips year-round, the DEP encourages following their My Green Montgomery updates on their social platforms.
