The Montgomery County Department of Police recently reported the loss of one of their own, K-9 Monte, a distinguished member of their force. According to a heartfelt statement by Monte's handler, Corporal Phil Brower, uploaded by the Montgomery County Police Department, the 8 and a half year old Belgian Malinois/German Shepherd mix passed away unexpectedly due to health complications.
From Slovakia to Montgomery County, Monte's tenure in law enforcement began in May 2018 and quickly grew to be more than just a job. Under Cpl Brower's guidance, Monte achieved certification in patrol work and controlled dangerous substances detection. Together, they were instrumental in numerous arrests. In one remarkable instance, Monte's keen senses led to successfully track to find an armed homicide suspect in the woods, a move that prevented potential harm to officers. This detail stands as a testament to the bravery and skill that Monte brought to the force, according to the Montgomery County Police Department.
When not engaging in police work, Monte led a life filled with activities that ranged from long woodland walks to aiding in the foundation of the "Iron Dog" obstacle course event. This event became a notable charity initiative benefiting Spike's K9 Fund, an organization which provided ballistic vests for the MCPD's K-9 unit and offered assistance for Monte's medical expenses during his hospitalization, as reported by the Montgomery County Police Department.
According to the same statement by Cpl Brower, Monte's last day of duty was filled with the same vigor and diligence he always exhibited. It was after his shift that Monte's health sharply declined, leading to an emergency visit where the dire diagnosis was received. Comforted by Brower, his wife, PO3 Julee Brower, and their daughter Katelyn, Monte passed away peacefully. The Montgomery County Police Department conveyed their gratitude to the Friendship Hospital for Animals in Washington, DC for their exceptional care during Monte's final moments.
Monte's legacy continues through the encouragement for donations in his honor to the Iron Dog campaign, supporting working dogs across the nation, as per the Montgomery County Police Department.
