Duval County experienced another motor vehicle tragedy yesterday when an antique motorcycle was rear-ended on the Wonderwood Bridge. According to Action News Jax, the crash occurred around 1:45 p.m., resulting in the motorcyclist's death and adding to the year’s growing toll of traffic-related fatalities in the area.
This incident marks the 151st fatal crash in Duval County and the 29th involving a motorcycle in 2024. The driver of the Toyota Corolla that struck the motorcycle remained at the scene, with police confirming there were no signs of impairment following the accident. Traffic was significantly impacted, as the eastbound lanes of the Wonderwood Expressway were closed for the investigation, reported by the First Coast News.
Speed and distraction appear to be concerning factors in this rise in vehicular fatalities. "It’s probably not a high-speed motorcycle so he may have been going a little slower than normal traffic would go. I believe the car approached him very quickly," Sgt. Robert Hungerford of the JSO Traffic Homicide Unit mentioned in an interview with Action News Jax. The JSO is urging drivers to exercise caution, especially leading into the holiday season, where traffic congestion increases significantly. Locals like Valerie McFarland express these safety sentiments, especially in light of the popular Girvin Road Christmas lights display.
As families and individuals prepare to hit the road this holiday season, with AAA estimating over 100 million people traveling, awareness and preventative actions are imperative. Tom Hackney, a News4JAX Crime and Safety Analyst, pointed out the dangers of distracted driving in a statement to News4JAX, noting, "You’ve got so many people who are driving distracted and driving distracted is almost as bad as driving intoxicated." He emphasizes the importance of knowing your route, staying alert, and being prepared for others' inattention on the road.
