Nashville's Metropolitan Police Department is issuing a strong warning to residents: lock up your vehicles and secure your belongings, particularly firearms. A staggering 73% of all guns reported stolen so far in 2024 in Davidson County were snatched from automobiles, translating to 900 out of 1,226 firearms, as reported by the Metropolitan Nashville Police Department.
Comparatively, the number stolen from vehicles this year is slightly down from 2023 when a total of 1,189 guns were taken from vehicles at the same point in the year. Nashville police have dedicated efforts to a special initiative that started on February 1st. This aggressive campaign has led to 1,009 arrests and helped recover 540 stolen vehicles and 224 guns, reflecting a concerted effort to tamp down on a spate of vehicle-related theft and crimes.
The implications of stolen guns go beyond mere property loss. The Nashville police point out the serious consequence: stolen vehicles and the arms they sometimes harbor often end up being used in violent crimes such as carjackings and robberies. They emphasize the importance of not just locking vehicle doors, but also ensuring that guns are not left unsecured in automobiles—a message that can't be overstated given current trends.
