Last month's tragic multi-vehicle collision on Interstate 15 that resulted in the death of a California man is currently under investigation by the Nevada State Police. The accident, which took place on Nov. 22 just after 5 p.m., near mile marker 78 northbound of I-15, involved a series of unfortunate events that unfolded rapidly on the busy interstate northeast of Las Vegas, as per FOX5 Vegas.
At the heart of the incident, a 2022 Freightliner tractor-trailer was reported to be making an illegal U-turn, prompting two 2020 Peterbilt tractor trucks, one silver and one black, to decelerate abruptly in the right travel lane. The box truck behind them, driven by Ivan Trodosechky Paniagua Martinez, a 42-year-old from Pasadena, California, collided with the rear of the black Peterbilt and then struck the silver Peterbilt. According to the Review Journal, Martinez "crashed into the rear of the black Peterbilt while attempting to make a lane change then struck the silver Peterbilt and overturned onto its flatbed trailer."
Martinez succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. Trying to avoid the cascading collisions, a 2024 Isuzu NRR box truck initiated a lane change, but ended up crashing into the left rear truck bed being hauled, according to information from FOX5 Vegas. The aftermath saw the black Peterbilt truck sliding before striking the back of the silver Peterbilt truck.
The driver of the Freightliner, which set off the tragic set of events, absconded from the scene before authorities arrived. As the Nevada State Police Traffic Homicide Unit takes charge of the investigation, they are dealing with a situation where the Freightliner "crossed a restricted median access road, turned onto southbound I-15 and fled the scene," as detailed by the Review Journal. This incident has been recorded as the 68th fatal crash on Nevada's roads in 2024, with a resultant death toll that now stands at 76 individuals.
