Following a spate of gun violence over the weekend, New Orleans is grappling with the aftermath of nine separate shootings that have left four individuals dead and several others wounded. This string of incidents began with a deadly double shooting in the West Lake Forest neighborhood of New Orleans East on Saturday afternoon, according to WDSU.
The New Orleans Police responded shortly before 4:25 p.m. in the 6700 block of Tara Lane, marking the start of a violent holiday weekend. As reported by NOLA.com, street fights quickly escalated into gunfire in multiple downtown locations, leaving a toddler fatally wounded in Central City and six other individuals injured on Canal Street and in the French Quarter.
The Bayou Classic weekend, usually a time for celebration, instead culminated in "brazen" gun battles and a crowd stampede on Bourbon Street, as mentioned on NOLA.com. Notwithstanding the presence of 400 law officers in the area, Captain Lejon Roberts of the New Orleans Police Department's Eighth District detailed during a chaotic seven-hour stretch that began Saturday evening and spanned into Sunday morning.
Local businesses felt the brunt of these violent clashes, with some choosing to close doors early amidst the turmoil. Melanie Taylor, owner of Willie Mae's Chicken on Bourbon Street, disclosed to FOX8Live that they had to shut down at 8 p.m., a stark contrast to their usual 4 a.m. closure. "Now you have businesses and my coworkers we feel like we have to protect ourselves we are wide open," said Taylor, voicing a concern echoed across the business community.
In response to the gunfire and its repercussions on the community, Mayor LaToya Cantrell defended New Orleans' ongoing crime reduction initiatives, emphasizing continued efforts to curb violence in the city. "Our holistic approach is how we got the numbers down and saved lives in our community," Mayor Cantrell proclaimed on FOX8Live.
