A precautionary boil water advisory is in effect for residents of the Lower 9th Ward and surrounding neighborhoods, the Sewerage & Water Board of New Orleans (S&WB) confirmed today. The advisory pertains to areas along Florida Avenue from Inner Harbor Navigation Canal to the parish line, the parish line from Florida Avenue to the Mississippi River, down the river to the Inner Harbor Navigation Canal, and the canal back to Florida Avenue, NOLA reports.
As water pressures dipped below the threshold of 20 pounds per square inch due to test water closure activities, a response was triggered by the S&WB officials. While the pressure has since been stabilized, the WDSU noted that the advisory will remain until water samples have been cleared by the health department. Officials anticipate the test could take up to 24 hours to produce conclusive results on the water's safety.
Residents are being advised by the SWBNO, acting in consultation with the Louisiana Department of Health (LDH), to use bottled or boiled water for drinking, food preparation, brushing teeth, and other hygiene-related tasks, as per a statement on the SWBNO's official site. This cautionary measure particularly applies to those with compromised immune systems, who have been recommended to extend the use of boiled or bottled water to bathing and handwashing to mitigate the risk of infection.
Instructions provided for boiling water call for residents to bring water to a rolling boil for one minute to eliminate contaminants. Officials endorse this practice as a reliable method for ensuring water safety and stress compliance until the advisory has been formally rescinded, which will be communicated to the public by the SWBNO.
