A 3-year-old Marrero girl remains hospitalized with intracranial bleeding after Jefferson Parish deputies say her father and his girlfriend invented a story about an electric scooter hit-and-run to hide months of alleged abuse. Carlton Webb, 23, and Monica Wilson, 34, are now facing charges of second-degree cruelty to a juvenile after investigators say the child's real injuries told a very different story than the one the couple gave police.
Deputies were first sent to a hospital on August 30 after Webb and Wilson reported that an unidentified man riding an electric scooter had struck the girl and fled the scene, according to the WDSU. But as medical staff examined the toddler, they found numerous superficial injuries in various stages of healing, along with the intracranial bleeding, a pattern investigators say did not match a single hit-and-run collision. As reported by WWL-TV, deputies were dispatched to the hospital that same day, August 30, after the couple's initial report.
Sheriff Joseph Lopinto said deputies determined the hit-and-run claim was false, and that the abuse behind the girl's injuries had reportedly been ongoing since July 2025, per JPSO. Webb is the girl's biological father, and Wilson is his girlfriend. The girl is listed in stable condition but remains in the hospital as of the latest update.
Charges Carry Decades-Long Exposure
Webb and Wilson were arrested on September 2 and transported to the Jefferson Parish Correctional Center in Gretna, where they were booked the same day. Second-degree cruelty to a juvenile, the charge both face, is defined under Louisiana Revised Statute 14:93.2.3 as intentional or criminally negligent mistreatment or neglect that causes serious bodily injury or neurological impairment to a minor under 17, according to the Louisiana State Legislature. A conviction carries a potential sentence of up to 40 years at hard labor.
Beyond prison time, investigators have not said whether Webb and Wilson will also face separate charges tied to the false report itself. The Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office says the investigation remains active and that no additional information is available for release at this time.
Part of a Grim Pattern in Jefferson Parish
This case lands amid a string of severe child-injury arrests that Jefferson Parish authorities have pursued in recent months. In August, Hoodline reported that 25-year-old Marrero mother Melvinika Williams was held without bond after her 1-month-old son suffered a brain bleed and a broken femur.
