In an unexpected wave of closures, various New York City eateries, including the distinguished Carroll Gardens establishment Buttermilk Channel, are shuttering their doors, signaling the end of an era for some beloved neighborhood fixtures. After a 16-year run, Buttermilk Channel has announced it will end operations next Tuesday, Gothamist reported. The bistro's owner, Doug Crowell, stated, "It’s just the time to close," citing the personal nature of the business and the high energy and passion required to maintain it, despite its popularity.
As the holiday season unfolds, a time traditionally significant for the restaurant industry, other closures have caught attention, including Ugly Baby in Carroll Gardens, known for its spicy duck salad. The restaurant served its final meal on Sunday after seven years of offering authentic Thai cuisine. Chef Sirichai plans to take a break and may work on a cookbook, as reported by Eater NY. Similarly, En Brasserie closed after being unable to renew its lease and was replaced by a concept from chef Daniel Humm, with its last day also on Sunday.
The financial challenges and changing dynamics of the restaurant industry appear to be factors in these closures, reflecting broader trends in the sector. For example, Zooba, an Egyptian fast-casual restaurant in Nolita, closed on December 5, despite media exposure and a feature on the television show Ramy. According to Eater NY, the restaurant struggled to recover from financial difficulties, even after adjusting its operations, including shifting between full service and fast casual, amid the ongoing impacts of the pandemic.
The closures reflect the challenges of operating restaurants in New York City's competitive and ever-changing dining landscape, with these iconic venues providing insight into the pressures faced by the industry. While some establishments are approaching their final days, the owner of Buttermilk Channel, in a statement to Gothamist, expressed appreciation for the community's support and the memories made at the restaurant.
