A shocking incident occurred in the Bronx yesterday morning when a newborn baby girl was discovered abandoned inside a tote bag. The infant was found on Reverend James Polite Avenue wrapped in a blanket and placed within a tote bag, according to ABC7NY. The baby was immediately rushed to Jacobi Hospital and is reported to be in stable condition.
Following the find, police have released a video with hopes to immediately pinpoint an individual seen in the footage. This person of interest was spotted with the bag shortly before the baby was discovered. "I called 911, it was cold, I put the baby inside, I didn't want to mess with any evidence, but it was too cold, I had to take the baby from outside," Mamadou Hafizjallow told ABC7NY, recounting the moment he found the abandoned child.
The person of interest, shown in the video footage wearing a hooded jacket, was observed carefully carrying the tote bag down the avenue, stopping at various homes before leaving the bag at one location. In a separate interview with News 12, Jallow detailed his initial encounter with the newborn, "The baby was shaking [her] hand, blinking the eyes," he said.
A neighbor, Donnell Warden told Hoodline, "If the mother didn’t want the child, or whatever circumstances it was, you would think they would either give it to the opposite side of the family or do better like giving it to the police of something." The discovery highlighted the option of New York State's Abandoned Infant Protection Act, which allows parents to safely surrender their newborns at designated safe havens within 30 days of birth, emphasizing that there were indeed safer alternatives available.
As the search for answers continues, the NYPD asks anyone with information to reach out to the Crime Stoppers Hotline at 1-800-577-TIPS (8477) or for Spanish, 1-888-57-PISTA (74782). The baby is expected to survive, a testament to the urgency and effectiveness of the community and medical response that followed the child's abandonment.
