A Nye County deputy and his K9 partner faced a harrowing escape from a fire that devastated their home early Sunday morning, with the local community stepping up in a significant display of support. As reported by FOX5 Vegas, Deputy Chris Smith was alerted to a fire in his garage around 1:30 a.m., which quickly threatened the safety of his K9, Zeus, trapped in a nearby kennel.
In an urgent response, Deputy Smith had to contend with not only the fiery blaze but also the task of securing his K9's safety, he was compelled to lift the chain-link kennel panels and, in a bid to ensure Zeus's escape, proceed to hurl the dog over a surrounding fence, the smoke inhalation suffered by Zeus did not result in critical injury, and the K9 is expected to make a full recovery. Nye County Sheriff Joe McGill elaborated on the incident, saying "He’s a dog, it’s fire, he doesn’t know what’s going on, and he was freaking out. I’m sure Deputy Smith was freaking out too. Not only does he have to try to get his dog to a safe place, he has to try to protect his home, his wife, his children, his property," as reported by FOX5 Vegas. Both Sheriff McGill and the deputy's garage, including his personal vehicles, were declared total losses.
"We have had a tremendous response to our Facebook post. A fencing company out here offered to assist; somebody has offered to donate a shed to Deputy Smith," detailed Sheriff McGill in the FOX5 Vegas coverage of the event. Despite strong community support and insurance, Deputy Smith faces significant financial challenges, as his homeowner's insurance doesn't cover all the expenses, including a new outdoor kennel fence and a shed for K9 Zeus. The sheriff's office has advised those who wish to help financially to contact the NCSO directly at 775-751-4255, according to a KTNV report.
