On Wednesday, the Zipper Lane on O‘ahu will be closed during the morning rush due to mechanical issues with the Zipmobile. The lane, which is usually open from 5:30 a.m. to 9 a.m. to help ease eastbound congestion on the H-1 freeway between Manager's Drive Overpass and Ke‘ehi Interchange, will not be in operation, according to the Hawai‘i Department of Transportation.
Hawai‘i Department of Transportation decided not to use the Zipper Lane without a backup. After an issue on Tuesday, the lane was closed late. Hawaii Department of Transportation said, "The secondary Zipmobile was used to close the Zipper Lane on Tuesday, but HDOT will not open the Zipper Lane without a backup out of an abundance of caution." The third Zipmobile is unavailable for maintenance, leaving no backup plan in place. Westside drivers were told to expect delays and allow extra time for their commute on Wednesday.
Hawaii Department of Transportation has confirmed that the vendor for the Zipmobiles will be on the island to service the third machine. "The vendor will assist in repairing the primary machine, and perform a checkup on the backup to ensure all three machines have been serviced during their visit." An update from Hawaii Department of Transportation will follow after the vendor completes the review of the machines. Commuters are advised to plan ahead for any potential delays due to the ongoing single lane closure.
