The Hawai‘i Department of Transportation has announced that the Zipper Lane will resume normal operations on Thursday. The Zipper Lane, which has been in use since 1998, provides extra eastbound capacity on the H-1 Freeway during morning rush hours (5:30 a.m. to 9 a.m.) for carpool vehicles, motorcycles, and electric vehicles, as reported by the Hawai‘i Department of Transportation.
Service on the Zipper Lane resumed after a one-day shutdown on Wednesday due to mechanical issues with the three Zipmobiles that manage its operation. According to a statement from the Hawai‘i Department of Transportation, "The secondary Zipmobile was used to close the Zipper Lane on Tuesday, but HDOT will not open the Zipper Lane without a backup out of an abundance of caution." Hawai‘i Department of Transportation addressed the issue and made necessary adjustments. "HDOT adjusted the secondary Zipmobile and is confident that it can open and close the Zipper Lane reliably," the department added.
On Wednesday, the Zipper Lane was closed due to mechanical issues, causing delays for Westside commuters. The Hawaii Department of Transportation said the closure was due to the lack of a working backup plan. A vendor will visit to fix the main Zipmobile and check the backups. "The vendor will assist in repairing the primary machine, and perform a checkup on the backup to ensure all three machines have been serviced during their visit," Hawaii Department of Transportation said, as stated by Hoodline.
