Ohio's own Lieutenant Nick Jones of the Westerville Fire Department has returned home after dedicating 21 days to hurricane relief efforts as part of Ohio Task Force 1's Urban Search and Rescue Team. The team, which includes 82 members, was deployed to assist in areas ravaged by the storms in Florida and North Carolina.
Their journey began in Orlando, where they preemptively positioned themselves ahead of Hurricane Helene's unforgiving winds and rain. Once the weather system passed, Jones and the team headed towards Asheville, North Carolina, where they shifted focus to the aftermath of the hurricane's equally destructive siblings—flooding and mudslides. According to the City of Westerville, Jones worked closely with canine specialists, sifting through the remains of what once were houses and properties in Cherokee and Boone counties, which are now reduced to debris and chaos.
The unstoppable force of another hurricane, named Milton, led Jones' squad back to Orlando, where this team utilized their skills in a rapid response scenario. A mobile home park there had suffered the corrosive touch of two tornadoes spewed from Milton's wrath, prompting Jones and other first responders' meticulous search and rescue operation.
In a straightforward recount of his role, Jones articulated, "My role as a Rescue Specialist is boots on the ground," as told to the City of Westerville's news section. "I conduct operations on the searches, executing door-to-door as well as targeted sites. If we find someone in distress or in need of treatment, we have all the tools at hand to effectively treat them in nearly any situation."
