The Ohio State Highway Patrol has reported a decrease in fatalities on the state's roadways during the Christmas holiday compared to the previous year. According to Ohio State Highway Patrol provisional statistics, two individuals lost their lives in separate crashes throughout the two-day holiday period, beginning on Monday at midnight and ending on Wednesday at midnight. In one of the crashes, it was noted that the victim was not wearing a safety belt.
The patrol's enforcement efforts over the holiday were vigorous, resulting in the arrest of 44 individuals for operating a vehicle while impaired and another 11 for illegal drug-related offenses. Safety was a top concern, with troopers issuing 84 citations for safety belt violations and 31 for distracted driving to prevent tragedies that can cast a long shadow over the festive season. During this period, troopers also assisted 434 motorists on Ohio roadways, showing the extent of their presence and dedication.
Comparatively, during the 2023 four-day Christmas holiday, the number of traffic fatalities was significantly higher, with 12 reported deaths, pointing to a possible impact of the intensified policing and public safety campaigns this year. Reducing fatalities is a step towards the Patrol's goal of safer travel for Ohio's citizens during high travel volume.
