The decision by Oklahoma Attorney General Gentner Drummond to dismiss a criminal charge against Oklahoma City Police Sgt. Joseph Gibson, who was captured on body camera footage slamming 71-year-old Lich Vu to the ground, has stirred a mix of responses. According to FOX 25 News, Drummond justified the dismissal on the grounds that Gibson’s conduct was in line with his training and lacked criminal intent.

While some support Drummond’s drop of the assault and battery charge, the Vietnamese community in Oklahoma, represented by Thuan Nguyen, president-elect of the Vietnamese American Community of Oklahoma, has expressed disappointment. "Our community is just disappointed actually, and is hurting, but more so the family's hurting," Nguyen said in an interview with AsAm News. The incident took place during a traffic stop after Vu refused a ticket and then was seen lightly hitting the officer's chest before Gibson took him to ground. Vu is recovering from serious injuries resulting from the fall, including a C1 fracture, an orbital fracture, and a brain bleed.

The charge was initially filed by Oklahoma County District Attorney Vicki Behenna, who felt Gibson used unreasonable force. However, Drummond overrode this decision, stating, "As Attorney General, I will not permit Oklahoma police officers to face criminal prosecution for conduct adhering to their training," as reported by KFOR News 4. He emphasized the necessity for individuals to comply with police instructions and not make physical contact with officers.

An internal investigation by the OKCPD is still underway to evaluate if Sgt. Gibson violated any department policies or procedures. OKCPD's response and updates regarding Gibson's status continue to be anticipated by both supporters and those critical of officer's actions. "I am surprised and disappointed that Attorney General Gentner Drummond took this case away from my office and the citizens of Oklahoma County,” said District Attorney Behenna. Meanwhile, the OKC FOP President, Mark Nelson, expressed relief at the charge dismissal, stating, "Dismissing the charge was the right thing to do, and we thank the Attorney General for his leadership," according to statements obtained by KFOR News 4.
