The Key to Home Partnership, an initiative dedicated to addressing homelessness in Oklahoma City, is reaching out to the community for urgent assistance. As the winter season bears down with its biting chill, the partnership is seeking donations to ensure that those without homes can face the cold with a bit more security. In particular, they are collecting essential items such as Mylar blankets, gloves, scarves, hats, thick socks, ready-to-eat meals, and hygiene products.
With the temperature set to rapidly decline, the partnership has emphasized the critical need for warm clothing and protective gear. "Winter is especially dangerous for those without stable housing," Jamie Caves, Strategy Implementation Manager for Key to Home, told the City of Oklahoma. He continued to explain that "These donated items are more than just supplies—they’re lifelines for our neighbors in need." This call to action not only aims to temporarily better guard individuals against the cold, but to arguably offer a semblance of compassion and hope amidst a struggle for survival.
The organization has streamlined the donation process by providing a full list of needed items on their website, as well as a link to an Amazon Wishlist for those who prefer to donate online. Physical drop-offs are being accepted at City Hall, whereas financial contributions, which are equally important, can be made through the Central Oklahoma Community Foundation's website.
Since its inception in April 2023, the Key to Home Partnership has successfully housed 332 people who were previously living without shelter. The partnership is a collaborative effort between over 50 agencies with the shared goal to dramatically reduce, if not end, homelessness in Oklahoma City. By launching a new governing system and improving the infrastructure and capacity to address homelessness, the partnership aims to rehouse or divert 100 youth by 2025 and to similarly assist 500 unsheltered individuals.
