
A tragic collision near Newaygo last Saturday evening resulted in the death of one person and left four others with serious injuries. Michigan State Police reported that the accident occurred around 6:30 p.m. at the intersection of M-37 and M-82. A 62-year-old man from Newaygo turned his vehicle westbound and collided with a southbound vehicle driven by a 23-year-old man from Grant, according to WOOD TV. The crash was severe enough to bring down nearby power poles and disrupt local utilities.
The death of a 42-year-old Newaygo woman, who was a passenger in the southbound vehicle, was announced at the scene. Also critically injured in the accident was a child, who along with the driver of the vehicle, was transported quickly to a hospital for emergent care. The driver of the northbound vehicle also sustained injuries. Michigan State Police suspect that alcohol may have been a contributing factor to the crash, and are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the collision, as noted by MLive.
In the wake of the accident, authorities have issued a direct plea to the public regarding safe driving during the holiday season. In a statement obtained by FOX 17 News, the Michigan State Police Sixth District expressed their condolences and urged the community: "If your holiday plans include consuming alcohol, PLEASE drink responsibly or find a designated driver. Sincere condolences to the families involved in this tragic crash."
